There is nothing more annoying than being in the middle of something and then suddenly the power goes off. Power cuts can cost businesses money and can prove a massive inconvenience to anyone. Below are ten things to do during a power cut:

1. Ensure you have some sort of light source, preferably a torch. It never hurts to stock up on batteries.

2. You should make use of appliances that do not need instant electricity. You can continue to use your laptop if it was charging when you were using it. It will have a good hour of charge if it was fully charged. You can also use mobile phones and iPods and so there is still plenty to keep you entertained.

3. For businesses there can still be positives as employee interaction will be improved creating a happier working environment and greater productivity when the power returns.

4. Large businesses have back up power supplies so they do not use productivity. However for medium and smaller businesses this is problematic. For their employees during a power cut there is no choice but to entertain themselves. This can be improved by businesses that do not have back up power supplies to change their business electricity deals, some may offer back up supplies and therefore it is best to keep an eye on the cheapest electricity supplier for the best business electricity prices. This can be done through price comparison websites and other places online.

5. During a power cut there is time to think about ways to avoid further power cuts. There is nothing worse than the power going off when you are undertaking an important task. Consequently you may decide enough is enough and look to other greener ways of generating electricity.

6. You may also decide that constant power cuts do not merit the high electricity prices you pay and when the power returns make enquiries to find the cheapest electricity supplier, you can do this online.

7. It is best to have a radio ready either to relax and listen to music or to keep up with any information about the power cut they may have. Radios can work without electricity if they are wind up or battery powered.

8. You may also want to catch up with things you have not had time to do previously. This can include going shopping, having a walk, walking the dog, sleeping, or taking a drive. If the power goes off later in the day you can eat out.

9. Switch off or unplug electrical appliances that were on when the power went off. If these were left on may cause a surge and permanently damage the appliance.

10. Speak to your neighbours. This can be important to see whether their power has gone off also. If not then there may simply be a surge in your house, in which case you will need to check your trip switch. You can also speak to neighbours to settle any long standing disputes you have lingering!

There are several things you can do during a power cut. Points 4-6 are especially important as a power cut can damage businesses and seriously make you reconsider other ways of generating electricity, especially if power cuts become more frequent.
