School sports days are lots of fun so why not hold your sports day as usual but combine it with fundraising to make the day even more memorable for the students.

Step 1: Planning

The first step to running a charity school sports day is to plan what events you will have and how you will raise money for your chosen charity or cause. There are numerous revenue streams to take advantage of. Below is a list of ideas for you to incorporate into your sports day fundraiser:

1. Sponsored 2000m walking race around the school playing fields
2. A tennis ball throwing competition whereby competitors pay a small fee to take part with the winner receiving a prize or certificate.
3. A three-legged race - each team pays an entry fee with the winning team receiving a prize or medal.
4. Sponsored swimming marathon at the local sports centre or school swimming pool
5. You could generate even more money by selling food, drinks and ice creams at the event - weather permitting!

As you can see the amount of ways you can raise money for charity through a sports day fundraiser is endless. It is also worth talking with local media and businesses to see if they will sponsor the event, either through money donations or prizes for the winners. In return, you can offer them free advertising on all promotional material.

Step 2: Promotion

As this is a school fundraising event, the promotional side of things is relatively easy. Just ensure you remind the pupils and their parents about the event, explaining who you are collecting money for and what they need to do. If you are holding a sponsored event, make sure you give the children sponsorship forms ahead of time so that they can raise lots of money prior to the event. You should also promote how much entry fees will be for each sporting event so that the pupils bring in enough money and highlight that there will be the opportunity to buy food and drinks too.

Step 3: Execution

On the day of the school sports day fundraiser ensure that everything is organised and your loyal and trusty volunteers are in position. Ideally, you want at least two volunteers on every event so that one can collect the entrance money and the other can deal with the event itself and hand out prizes to the winners. You should also promote each fundraising activity on the day such as posters highlighting the prizes that can be won and where to go to register for the event.

It is also a great idea to hand out leaflets explaining who you are collecting money for; this will not only spread awareness of the cause but may help you raise even more money through donations.

If you are holding a sponsored race or activity remember to follow up with letters to parents and students reminding them to collect the money from their sponsors.
