As we enter the Year of the Rabbit and the next Chinese New Year, here's our guide to the top ten tips to creating perfect Feng Shui in the bedroom.
The ancient Chinese art of aesthetics, Feng Shui offers advice in harnessing positive energy in the home via colour choice, aspect, room layout and symbols. As well as creating happy, healthy living environments it's believed that the fine art of Feng Shui can play an instrumental role in influencing our relationships, wealth and life success.
Fresh Air
The entire home and especially the bedroom should be aired at least twice a week - to allow yin energy to escape, opening windows on a sunny days increases the opportunity for yang energy to enter, bringing with it good fortune.
Overhead Beams
Feng Shui dictates that the presence of exposed overhead beams causes bad energy for anyone sitting or sleeping below. Bedrooms in the eves will be particularly susceptible to this, but can be cleansed by hanging a five-rod wind chime - hollow rods will allow the chi to be transferred into good luck.
Duck Love
In Chinese philosophy ducks symbolise fidelity and happiness - rules of Feng Shui state that hanging a picture of a pair of Mandarin ducks in the southwest corner of the bedroom will boost relationships and love life.
Bed Position
Beds should be positioned diagonally opposite the door - feet or head should never be pointing towards an open door. Mirrors in the bedroom should not reflect the bed, as this suggests the presence of a third party.
Sleeping
Beds should have a headboard and be pushed up against the wall - the height of the bed, including mattresses, should be at least 45cm above floor level. Whilst the bed should not be pointing directly at the door, it should have a good view of the door.
Bedroom Entrance
The entrance to a bedroom shouldn't be positioned opposite a mirror, staircase or toilet door - if it is, the negative energy can be countered by using a screen to create a barrier or by hanging chimes.
Decoration
Bedrooms should be decorated with dark yin paint, images of fierce animals should be avoided - as should images of water, which would bring good luck in other areas of the home.
Windows
Sleeping next to or having the bedroom door next to very large windows can cause very powerful chi that is disruptive to both sleep patterns and energies. Heavy drapes can be used to diffuse the chi.
Bedroom Doors
Ensuite bathrooms are a popular addition to modern bedroom design, but if the bed is positioned between both the bedroom and bathroom door the resulting energies that flow over the bed are opposing and conflicting - the bed should be repositioned or a screen placed alongside.
Separate work and rest
Desks or workspaces should be removed from the bedroom - work and rest energy are opposed and therefore create conflict.
