Dining tables are the centrepieces of dining rooms, it's quite logical. What's not so logical (or even creative) is how many people choose to position their dining tables. Most, to be honest simply take the term ‘centrepiece' quite literally and place it slap bang in the centre of the room without another thought! The fact is, the positioning of the dining table is key to the overall appearance of the dining room as it really is generally the most dominant furniture piece.

The first step is to stand in the doorway of the dining room. If there is more than one entrance, then stand in the opening that people use most often to access the room. Take a good look at the room and appreciate that this is your first impression, as it would be for any guest or visitor. As mentioned, dining tables usually take up the most space and dominate the surroundings so this is what will be focused on above all else.

One of the keys to interior design is focus and the control of focus. Where do you want guests to focus their attention when they enter the room? Do you want them to concentrate on the dining table, or is there a particular piece of art, or an ornament that you're particularly fond of. In this case, a clever little trick lies in the placement angle.

As you enter the room, you can draw focus to the dining table by showing as much of it as you can (that is to say, position it so you can see all three dimensions). If you'd rather take attention away from the dining table, then angle it head on, so the third dimension is essentially hidden. This way there is less table to focus on and the alternative centrepiece takes the stage.

The next step, once the dining table has been positioned, is to walk around the table slowly. Examine the room from every angle. While it is rarely possible to be equally pleased with all angles, you can pick your favourites and bear them in mind. What proceeds to follow is strategic seating. Take a seat at each spot around the dining table and absorb the view. Some seats will, again, be more pleasing than others.

When entertaining guests or trying to impress a certain somebody (or indeed several some-bodies), you can always propose that they sit in the more pleasing positions and you sacrifice yourself to one of the lesser placements. Don't worry; once they leave you can sit in the best seat as much as you want! This way, you give every visitor to your humble home the best possible aesthetic experience. Ultimately, positioning of dining tables comes to trial and error, but these tips should provide a world of help.

Finally, we consider the elements of lighting and wall space. Simply ensure that wall decor is spaced out evenly so as to avoid and ‘bald patches' and use lighting to suit the mood of the event. Ceiling lights, indoor spotlights, candles and lamps all play a part in illuminating the magnificent dining tables that are out there to be found.
