Based on past traditions and styles, chandeliers were primarily only used within dining rooms or the foyers or large and decadent homes which were typical of the rich. Those which were made from cut crystal or glass were perceived as only being worthy for those who were extremely wealthy and since they are typically of quite a large size, they could only be used as a centerpiece for a room which would require the room to be of a considerable size.

However, new modern designs have changed the original look of the chandelier, making them ideal for any home regardless of its size or the owner's status in society. Gone are the overly lavish styles and sizes and in comes smaller, simpler designs which allow the chandelier to be welcoming and a great asset to a room, rather than commanding attention which was common with larger designs. In fact, the new designs of chandeliers have been so ground breaking that they can now be used within any room in the home whether it is your kitchen, bedroom or living room.

The first rule when it comes to choosing a chandelier for your home is to remember that no matter what the stereotypical image of a chandelier may be, they do not always have to be designed in an elegant or sophisticated manner. Along with the typical crystal design, chandeliers can now also be found in colonial, teacup, revival, stained glass and contemporary designs. Some styles still depict the traditional large scale size, but there are many more understated designs which span no further than 2-3 feet in diameter. However, even if you choose to purchase a smaller design, it is important to remember that chandeliers can be expensive, no matter what style they may be. It is for this reason that it is important to purchase one which effectively accents whichever room you intend it to be within. Interior designer suggest that homeowners look to purchase one which complements the time period and style of architecture within your home as opposed to the way in which the room is currently decorated. This is mainly as every time you change the décor of your room, you may feel your chandelier no longer ‘fits' within the room.

Before purchasing your chandelier, you firstly need to think about the size of the room for which it is intended. Designers believe that you should look for one which is 2 inches in diameter for every foot that the room is wide. This means that should you be thinking of placing your chandelier in a living room which is 15 feet wide, then your chandelier should be no bigger than 30 inches in diameter. Next, think about the overall look of your existing furniture within the room. Think carefully about the height of your furniture, taking into consideration any tall pieces which may be in the way of your chandelier once hung. Also think about the height of those who reside in your home incase you have any exceedingly tall family members!

In order for the room to collectively look appeasing, think about what will be directly underneath the chandelier. For example, if you are planning on adding your chandelier into your dining room which is hung directly over a dinging room table, think about the centre piece of said table. Your chandelier should be in proportion to the centerpiece and around a third of the diameter of your table. If your chandelier is going to be the source of light for the room, you will finally need to ensure that it is able to produce enough light to fill the room. One of the easiest ways in which to use a chandelier effectively as a light source is to install a dimmer switch. This will not only allow you to control the light, but will mean that the chandelier does not undermine any other light source in the room.

With so many new and interesting designs at Upscale Lighting, it has never been easier to implement a chandelier into your home-no matter what size or style you may desire. By taking the following points into consideration you will not only be provided with a chandelier which is stunning and a true asset to your home, but one which will truly bring your room together.
