There are many styles & types of bedroom wardrobes, from cheap pine wardrobes to state of the art Italian wardrobes with almost every type of storage option for the inside you can imagine. Do you spend your money on a top quality made to order wardrobe or hold on to your cash so you can afford the clothing to go in it?
Forgetting for the moment about the way you would like your wardrobe to look the main thing to consider is how you would like the space within to be set out, & how much storage you need. You may also want to add other functions to your bedroom wardrobe, for example an integrated home office, or space to put your television out of sight. There are several different types of wardrobe, so you should think about which one is going to work best for you.
Self Assembly ‘Instant' Wardrobes
If you need something to hang clothing on quickly, or want to spend the bare minimum these will do the trick. One step up from stand alone clothes rails they have a frame, a rail, a shelf at the bottom & have a cover of canvas or nylon, or are made in wood (usually pine) or white melamine. Not very tall they are not a good way to use your space, & won't have internal storage options, but are the least expensive option. Some of the ‘fancy' ones have drawers at the bottom, or are divided into 2 parts inside, with shelves as well as a rail, but most don't. Used by students, in childrens rooms, guest bedrooms & if you need something fast.
Armoires
Armoires are ornate, old style or antique freestanding wardrobes, normally made in wood, which can look wonderful, but unfortunately don't have internal layouts that can be set up in different ways. They have clothes rails & sometimes drawers at the bottom, but don't usually have shelving, let alone lighting or other storage options inside. Size is usually fixed so you can't have them made to fit, & they aren't normally taller than 2.2 metres. But they can look great, perfect for an older style home, & often look wonderful in a entrance way, guest room or even a living room.
Self Assembly Kitset Wardrobes
Probably the best wardrobes in this type are the ones from Ikea, which are relatively inexpensive but have some choice when it comes to door finishes & inside storage options. Not amazing quality as a rule (they can be a little flimsy) they do have the ability to be set up inside to suit, so rails & shelves can be positioned to suit you, plus they also have different options for drawers, baskets, shoe racks etc. These are good if you want a ‘proper' wardrobe, but don't need it to last too long so don't want to spend too much.
Customised Wardrobes
The most flexible option, these are made in Europe (Italy, generally) & have a huge choice of sizes, colours & finishes & storage options. Working with a wardrobe designer you choose the number & size of cabinets you want, the door colour & finish & the internal storage options. As there are so many different brands & each brand has slightly different size cabinets if you have a certain size space to fill these can be perfect. They can be cut to fit under stairs, in lofts etc, & can be set up in corners.
Cabinets can be as tall as 2.9 metres, which means they make the most of the available space as well, & as they have so many different types of storage it is possible to create a very efficient layout. They are also at the forefront of technology, the latest developments include dedicated full height pull out handbag storage, special shoe ‘drawers', lighting that works when you open the doors, sliding doors that sit flush when closed & many other useful features.
If you have the budget & want a wardrobe that lasts customised wardrobes from Italy will provide a practical, efficient & beautiful way to keep your clothing, belts, ties, shoes & handbags safe. For a degree of flexibility on a budget consider wardrobes that are designed for self assembly but have a few different ways of being set up, & for cheap & cheerful a fixed size, self assembly wardrobe can be good value.
