A lot of furniture, you choose for the way it looks, and part of that is how other people view it. If you're buying garden furniture, you're going to be aware that random passers by will be looking at it. If you're furnishing your living room, then at least part of your thinking is going to be about what visitors are going to think, and how to accommodate the people that you'll have sitting on it.

Bedroom furniture is different. It's more personal, more intimate. It's not something that the world gets to see, and so when choosing it, you're able to do so without having to think about anyone's opinion but your own. In that way, bedroom furniture is probably the best reflection of your personal style in your entire home.

Having said that, filling up your bedroom isn't necessarily easy, either. There are literally hundreds of thousands of possible combinations, if not millions, that means that it's very easy to become overwhelmed by options.

But it's not hard to choose the right bedroom furniture for your life and your home if you take the time to plan ahead. You need to look at several different things in order to make the ideal choice in bedroom furniture. If you take a couple of minutes ahead of time, then you can save yourself hours later, and probably a lot of money.

You spend, most likely, maybe an hour or so using your dining room furniture each day. Maybe a couple of hours sitting on your living room furniture. Your garden furniture only gets used, in most places, maybe half the year. But you use your bedroom furniture every day. In fact, you're going to spend about a third of your time there. So you should definitely put comfort at the top of your concerns.

This is especially important considering how important getting enough rest is to our lives in general. The obvious thing to consider is the mattress, but there is more to bedroom comfort than a cushy mattress.

The very basic thing you need to think about is whether the bed and associated furniture gives you enough room. What you need to consider is how much space you need to be comfortable. Are you going to be sharing the bed with another person? With pets? Are you tall?

You need to get something that's big enough to accommodate you comfortably, and this means both width and length. You might also give a little thought to height, as well. You wouldn't think it would matter, but a lot of people feel uncomfortable in a bed that's either too high or too low.

A less obvious kind of comfort comes from the other pieces of your bedroom set, like bedside cabinets and dressers. Again, you need to consider your lifestyle: are you the kind of person who reads at night? Do you like to have a drink? Then you need a bed stand. Lots of clothes? Might need a chest of drawers.

Having said all that, you do need to consider the actual size of your bedroom. There's no point in buying a king size bed, or even a super king size bed, if your bedroom area is the size of a walk in closet. One of the easiest ways to cause a lot of frustration for yourself is to buy furniture that's too big for the room.

At the very least, make sure that you have enough room to walk around the perimeter of the bed with crashing into it or the walls. Or other bedroom furniture, for that matter. If you're not sure about sizes, measure you bedroom and keep those measurements at hand while you're shopping.

This applies to all bedroom furniture, not just the bed. What you don't want to do is have to clamber over dressers and bedside cabinets just to get into the room. Always err to the side of the bed; you can always store stuff anywhere, but you need a comfortable place to sleep.

Aside from size and comfort, all that's really left to consider is style. There's no reason not to choose something that you love, so take the time to look at a wide variety of styles to find something that you really like. If you take the time now, you'll love your furniture for years to come.
