If you're looking to make some improvements to your property then it's natural that you want to do them in a cost-effective way. Whether you're looking to replace your tired old bathroom or go the whole hog and build an extension to your house, specialist work requires professionals and therefore comes at a price.
Your first thought will likely be to shop around for several quotes with a view to going with the cheapest one. It's a good base to start from, but be wary that the cheapest offer won't necessarily get you the best results. If one of your quotes is significantly lower than the rest then you have to ask yourself why - does the company in question really have access to materials that are much cheaper to acquire than those of their competitors, or is there a chance that they don't really know how much the job will cost to complete efficiently?
One good way to ensure you get a reputable company in to carry out the work you want doing is to follow a recommendation from friends or family. If you know somebody who has had home improvements completed to a standard that they're pleased with, then it can really take the pressure off your decision making process. Do make sure that the company in question can do the specific work you need to a high standard, though; just because they did a good job on your friend's kitchen doesn't necessarily mean that they are experienced in building an extension, for example.
It's often an idea to go with a company that specialises specifically in the area that you're looking for rather than a general ‘jack of all trades' builder. The latter type of company may well give you an attractive quote, but will they really carry out the work to the standard that you could get elsewhere?
Once you've narrowed down your choice and think you have decided on a company to carry out the work, get in touch with them and ask them to provide you with details of work they've done on properties in your local area. Go along personally to check out the results of their labour; if the owners are happy to let you have a look around, get a good look inside rather than trying to assess the standard of work from far away.
After you've had work done to your property, be sure to contact your home insurance provider to let them know. Depending on the work that has been carried out, they may need to make adjustments to your policy.
