Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common digestive disorder that is seen by physicians. Approximately 45 million Americans, or almost 20 percent of the population, have symptoms of IBS, with fewer than half of them seeking a physician's help for it. Twice as many women suffer from this condition as men. IBS usually affects those people between the ages of twenty-five and forty-five.

In IBS, the muscular contractions of the digestive tract become irregular and uncoordinated. This interferes with the normal movement of food and waste material, leading to the accumulation of mucus and toxins in the intestine. This accumulation partially obstructs the digestive tract. This obstruction traps gas and stools, in turn causing bloating, distention, and constipation. IBS may affect the entire gastrointestinal tract, ranging from the mouth through the colon. In this disorder, there are no physical signs of disease in bowel tissue.

The cause of IBS is still unknown, but one theory is that irregularities in the intestinal hormones responsible for bowel motility play a key role. According to this theory, those people with IBS have abnormal contractions of the smooth muscle of the digestive tract. Some scientists believe that a virus or bacterium has something to do with this condition. While others believe that lifestyle factors including stress, diet, and food allergies are common causes. The overuse of antibiotics, antacids, or laxatives may also be a factor.

There are many symptoms associated with IBS. These include pain, anorexia, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, intolerances to certain foods, mucus in the stools, and nausea. The pain is often triggered by eating and is often relieved by a bowel movement. Because of the pain, diarrhea, nausea, and sometimes severe headaches and even vomiting, a person with IBS may come to dread eating. Whether an individual with IBS eats normally, malnutrition may result due to nutrients not being absorbed properly. Because of this, people with IBS require up to 30 percent more protein than normal, and an increased intake of minerals and trace elements.

There are multiple other diseases that can be related to IBS. These include candidiasis, colon cancer, diabetes, mellitus, gallbladder disease, mal-absorption disorders, pancreatic insufficiency, ulcers, and parasitic infections. Over 100 different disorders may be linked to the effects of IBS, with arthritis being one that is linked to about 25 percent of adults. In those with IBS, peripheral arthritis, which affects the ankles, knees, and wrists is mainly experienced, with affects on the spine less frequently. IBS can also be related to skin disorders, but this happens to be unusual.

Although IBS is painful, it is not serious. People who have it can lead active, productive lives if they change their diets, get regular exercise, and replace needed nutrients. The following nutrients are recommended for dealing with IBS: essential fatty acids, L-glutamine, vitamin B complex, acidophilus, colostrums, fiber, free-form amino acid complex, garlic, a multivitamin and mineral complex, NAG, proteolytic enzymes, quercetin, calcium, magnesium, and shark cartilage.

Additionally, the following herbs may be beneficial: Silymarin, licorice, red clover, burdock root, alfalfa, aloe vera, peppermint, skullcap, valerian root, balm, chamomile, fenugreek, ginger, goldenseal, lovelia, marshmallow, pau d'arco, rose hips, slippery elm, and myrobalan.

The first step is to introduce probiotics to your diet in dietary supplement form. You need a high potency acidophilus probiotic to help slow down the loose bowels. You can find quality acidophilus probiotics at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose name brands like Solaray and Kal to ensure quality of what you buy for a better functioning colon.
