Low blood sugar, which is technically known as hypoglycemia, is a condition in which there is an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood. Reactive hypoglycemia results when blood sugar drops to an abnormally low level between two and five hours after eating a meal. Symptoms of this type of hypoglycemia include sweating, tremors, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and hunger. In most cases, this results from the over-secretion of insulin by the pancreas. Insulin is essential for facilitating the transport of glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, especially those cells of muscle and fatty tissue. Insulin also causes glucose to be synthesized in the liver. Normal carbohydrate metabolism is impossible without the proper functioning of the pancreas. As the levels of blood sugar continue to drop, stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol kick in at high levels in order to prevent the blood sugar level from dropping dramatically.

An additional type of hypoglycemia is known as fasting hypoglycemia. It occurs when a person abstains from food for eight or more hours. The symptoms of this type of hypoglycemia are often much more severe than reactive hypoglycemia, including seizures, loss of consciousness, and a loss of mental acuity. The underlying cause of this type of hypoglycemia is generally liver disease or a tumor of the pancreas.

A person who suffers from hypoglycemia may display any or all of the following symptoms: fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations, nausea, blurred vision, an inability to concentrate, light-headedness, headache, irritability, fainting spells, depression, nervousness, anxiety, cravings for sweets, confusion, night sweats, weakness in the legs, swollen feet, a feeling of tightness in the chest, constant hunger, pain in various parts of the body, nervous habits, mental disturbances, and insomnia. If blood sugar levels of an individual drop below 40 milligrams of glucose per 100 cubic centimeter of blood, an individual may become unconscious. Those people who have hypoglycemia may become very aggressive and lose their tremors very easily. Within only a few hours of eating sweets or fats, any or all of these symptoms may occur. The onset and severity of these symptoms are directly related to the length of time since the last meal was eaten and the type of foods that meal contained.

It is likely that more and more Americans are experiencing this condition today due to poor dietary habits that include eating large quantities of simple carbohydrates, sugars, alcohol, caffeine, and soft drinks, and insufficient amounts of complex carbohydrates. Additionally, high stress levels are believed to be a contributing factor to the increase in number of hypoglycemia cases. Hypoglycemia can be inherited, but it is most often due to an inadequate diet. Many other bodily disorders can cause hypoglycemia, including pancreatitis. Other common causes include smoking and consuming large amounts of caffeine. The following nutrients are beneficial in assisting those who are faced with hypoglycemia: Brewer's yeast, chromium picolinate, garlic, glutathione, pancreatin, proteoytic enzymes, Quercetin, vitamin B complex, zinc, l-carnitine, magnesium, manganese, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamin E, liver extract injections, and a multivitamin and mineral complex.

The following herbs are also beneficial in dealing with hypoglycemia: angostura bitters, artichoke leaf, gentian root, astragalus, licorice root, dandelion, gudmar, milk thistle, Echinacea, parsley, pau d'arco, raspberry leaves, and uva ursi.

If your blood sugar is a little out or wack, give herbal and mineral supplements a try to help regulate and level out your blood sugar naturally. Look to your local or internet vitamin store for these vitamins.
