Places throughout Southeast Asia and Indian have used turmeric for thousands of years. The herb was used for flavoring foods, dyeing fabrics, and medicinally. Turmeric was and continues to be an important part of the Indian culture. Ayurvedic medicine in India uses this herb for its uses as a digestive aid and also for cleansing, fevers, infections, dysentery, arthritis, and liver problems. The herb is recommended by Chinese physicians for hemorrhage, liver conditions, menstrual problems, and congestion. Turmeric was also used by the ancient Greeks for its medicinal benefits. Although the use of turmeric has not yet caught on in North America, research has found that the herb possesses a variety of healing benefits.

Turmeric is found in curry powder. Also, it is used to make an orange-yellow dye. Many medicinal claims have been made for this herb. Among these include a treatment for ringworm, flatulence, hemorrhage, arthritis, fevers, digestion, liver conditions, gallbladder complaints, and lung congestion.

Studies done primarily in India have found a variety of benefits, of which they have documented. Curcumin, which is the yellow pigment that is found in turmeric, helps to stimulate the bile flow, which aids digestion. Evidence of liver-protective properties in curcumin has also been found. Animals that were given liver-damaging drugs were able to receive protection by using curcumin. One benefit of turmeric is its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are responsible for helping to protect against free-radical damage, which often leads to cell damage, aging, and numerous diseases. Turmeric is able to stop the progression of free-radicals. It also prevents free radicals from occurring.

Research has determined that turmeric is a stronger antioxidant than vitamins C and E. It is able to help the body by improving its own antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. Other evidence of anticancer activity has been found in turmeric. Curcumin is believed to be the active component in turmeric, helping it to inhibit tumor cell growth. Large arrays of studies have found these same results. Curcumin may also be responsible for helping to restrict the growth of existing tumors and preventing other cancers. Among these include stomach, colon, esophageal, breast, and skin.

The anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric have also been studied. There seem to be both analgesic and anti-inflammatory benefits provided by this herb for conditions such as arthritis. When curcumin is compared with NSAIDs, it was found to be as or more effective in treating inflammatory conditions. Additional studies have determined that turmeric possesses even more value. It also contains antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Turmeric may also have a cholesterol-lowering ability, which helps in preventing heart disease. There is also anticoagulant activity that can help to prevent internal blood clots, which are responsible for leading to stroke or triggering a heart attack.

In short, the root of the turmeric plant is used to provide antibacterial, anticoagulant, antifungal anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. The primary nutrient found in this herb is antioxidants. Primarily, turmeric is extremely beneficial in dealing with arthritis, cancer, infections, inflammation, heart disease, joint pain, liver disease, stroke, and tumors. In order to obtain the best results when supplementing with this, or any herb, it is important to consult your health care provider before beginning any regimen.
