Sleep Patterns and a Good Bed

Sleep has always been a mystery. Psychologists have sought to explain it, and many theories have been put forward. Each time a new scientific technique becomes available it is used to probe sleep's mysteries. Sleep is essential to survival. If you deprive a human or other mammal of sleep, it will die.

There are two types of sleep that are called REM or Rapid Eye Movement and NREM which is the opposite. Also there is more to NREM than meets the eye; in fact there are a number of different kinds of NREM and each one is considered to be a stage through which we journey on our passage from being awake to the dream state of REM.

Sleeping is normally a cyclic process and we experience many different phases as our sleep progresses. Sometimes we are in a state of light sleep from which we are easily awakened, and at other times we sleep so deeply that we are hard to wake up. The secrets of sleep are revealed by the electrical brain waves that emanate from us.

We all like to enjoy a good night's sleep, but the amount of sleep we need varies between people. Some people may need only a few hours sleep whilst others cannot survive on less than eight hours. Babies sleep most of the time as do very old people.

At all stages of life getting sufficient sleep is essential to our physical and mental well-being.

One of the most reliable ways of achieving this necessary sleep is by ensuring that we are comfortable. Although we can all cat nap, fall asleep on a train or a plane, we are never fully refreshed by that kind of sleep. Proper sleep can only be achieved if our body is comfortable and is supported in such a way that there are no regions of uneven pressure that will disturb us through the night. Good mattresses are essential to this process. The quality of the bed matters too, and this is something that both animals and humankind have always recognised.
