When you’re young, it is understandable that you’re not even thinking about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but you quite possibly are thinking about sex. It is very important to ensure that you protect yourself if you’re going to have sex, especially if it‘s with a new partner. It isn’t just up to the guy, in the same way as it isn’t just up to the girl as you are both responsible for yourselves. You might only think that you need to protect yourselves from getting pregnant, so the pill will be fine, but you also need to protect against STD’s - just because you’re young doesn’t mean you won’t get them.
The most effective way to protect yourself is to abstain from sex, preferably until you are old enough and mature enough to make a responsible decision and that may well be much older than the legal age of consent. However, these days people seem to engage in sexual relations earlier rather than later. Therefore, the best and most current way to stay STD free is to use condoms. If your partner isn’t willing to wear them then that’s their tough luck, either that or get yourselves down to a gum clinic for an STD test each beforehand.
