Since different working places give different risk levels, the hi vis Workwear is well divided by groups and categories.
Since the first standard approved in 1999 in the U.S.A, things have changed a lot. The first standard only referred to bikers and to people that worked with heavy equipment. The new standards of high visibility workwear include in this category, policemen, emergency workers, street workers and any type of person that has to be on the road at night. All the people working in such conditions have a different risk category. According to this, they have to wear, more or less of the visible equipment, from a simple vest to a full package, meaning pants, jacket with long selves, and a heat for hi vis Workwear.
The higher risk category is the fire department. Here, not night is the real danger, but smoke. Not being able to see a co-worker in a cloud of smog, with air impossible to breathe, can make the difference between life and death. This type of job involves a higher risk; this is why fire department people have to wear hi vis Workwear that can be noticeable not only at night, but also trough thick smoke.
High visibility workwear for fire man enter the class three level of visibility with 5 cm think white strips for a maximum reflect. The first class of visibility is usually worn by people that work on the street at a distance from traffic. In such cases the strips are wren just on the legs or hands. The second class of visibility involves strips on shoulders or waist. Since these cloths started to be used by people that came across night jobs in open fields, the numbers of accidents caused by low visibility rates have seriously diminished.
Considering the fact that, most people exposed to accidents are working in low visibility conditions, or have a vehicle that can't protect them (like a bike), these special clothes are mandatory. ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 standard for high visibility workwear is a review of the 2004 standard, that is checked every 5 years to see if it matches the new vehicles and risk factors existing in the working field.
