The creation of a human being is always a very interesting one. Would the child have turned out the same no matter what egg was fertilised by what little tadpole? It seems not. For example, a brother or sister created by the same parents can be totally different in mind and body. This therefore can mean that nature has an upper hand in the everlasting nature vs. nurture struggle. It also means that there is a huge slice of luck in being born or not. Does this then mean that the evil leaders of some countries should be grateful for their existence on Earth, and start being nice to their fellow human man instead of the vile savages they are? Of course not. They still act the same way.
But you do have the chance to feel lucky. Not only of experiencing life, but also of being alive in the right time and place. If you were born hundreds of years ago, the only Christmas present you may be ready to receive is a day off working at the factory, or mine, or wherever people worked in the past. Also, your toys and games might just be a twig, rather than a video games console.
Other than play with twigs, people born a long time ago also had to contend with more disease, worse weather (so fiction tells us), and also far far worse conditions of living and working. There were only a few rich people, and even they suffered, compared to today. Their wives were filled with syphilis, they had little or no access to exotic food from foreign lands, such as cumin, and their days were spent thinking about gift ideas such as a trip to the guillotine.
Much better for your wife to receive flowers rather than a trip to the guillotine - make sure you remind her of that next time she moans at you.
