Joining the gym - and sticking to it - can be an expensive process, not to mention time consuming. Those of us serious about getting fit but unable to commit to an expensive gym membership can take solace in the fact that there are cheaper and more convenient ways to get our weekly workouts.
Keeping fit at home is about at convenient as it gets - and while it's true that it'll take a significant outlay to get yourself kitted out with the kind of equipment that will give you the same kind of workout that a full gym offers, in the long term it can save you hundreds and thousands of pounds.
Of course, how much you decide to spend will depend on how serious you are about your keep fit. If you're just looking to do some basic exercise now and then to keep the calories at bay, then a single exercise bike or treadmill will do the job admirably. On the other hand, if you're looking for a more rounded workout then you'll want to add a few more pieces of equipment - maybe a cross trainer or rowing machine - as well as a multi-gym to allow weight work as well as aerobic options.
A major factor to consider before shopping for your home gym is the amount of space it will take up, as some pieces of equipment are bulkier than they first seem. An average multi-gym, for example, fills the same kind of floor space as you would set aside for a double bed.
For those who don't have the required space, there are other, unconventional options. Games consoles such as the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have an abundance of keep fit games available for them with some being incredibly effective. The quality of these titles is variable, so it's worth doing some research before committing to one in particular, but Wii Fit for the Wii and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved for the Xbox 360's Kinnect camera have been particularly well received.
However you decide to do it, keeping fit at home is an increasingly viable option for those who prefer not to pour money into the pockets of gym owners. After an initial outlay, home keep fit equipment begins paying for itself in spades and offers users a highly convenient way to keep their bodies trim.
