Five Ways to Keep Fit This Winter

Keeping fit in the Winter is essential for a healthy body and mind. The Summer is over, the days are getting shorter and the weather colder. The excitement of long warm days is turning into long evenings that you would rather spend in a warm pub or tucked up in a blanket in front of the television. Autumn and Winter do not lend themselves well to keeping fit and healthy and the less active we become the longer and darker the days can seem.

Keeping fit and healthy over the colder months is an important factor in keeping away symptoms of 'cabin fever' especially for those who work during daylight hours and don't often see the sun till the weekend, if it decides to make an appearance at all.

So how can we keep ourselves motivated and upbeat? Try any of the following activities and the Winter will fly by. You may even discover something new:

1. Join A Gym
The usual months for joining a gym aren't till January which makes this a perfect time to get into your local gym and start working out. Over Winter the gym will be quieter and you will have more access to a lot of the equipment. If the gym you join has a sauna you can also spend more time getting hot rather than cold.

2. Learn to Snowboard
Snowboarding is one of the most exciting Winter sports around and it is easily accessible even without the snow. The UK offers many indoor ski slopes with real snow and these are often priced competitively. 3. Learn to Swim
The benefits of swimming far outweigh the small amount of effort required initially to learn to swim. Swimming can help with general health and fitness as well as mental well-being. An ideal sport for Winter training, swimming indoors is safe and fun. For those with children, teaching them to swim is a gift of a life skill they will never lose.

4. Aerobics at Home
If you are short on cash or shy of public exercise then perhaps you might find it easier to work out at home. There are a wealth of aerobics videos available online that you can work through in your own time and in your own space.

5. Running
Potentially for those with a little more grit, running in Winter is a great way to get outdoors and avoid that cooped up feeling. With the right clothing this doesn't have to be as traumatic an experience as you think it does. Be sure to get hold of thermal compression wear and some hi vis clothing to avoid any accidents in the dark. Running is also a great way of meeting people and there are many running clubs across the UK.

For those who are more interested in keeping mentally active rather than physically fit, try reverting back to some good old fashioned board games like Scrabble or Monopoly. These will keep your mind sharp and beat spending the whole evening staring at the box.
