The skin is the body's largest organ and it has a variety of important roles including protecting the body from environmental factors and pathogens, controlling body temperature and holding organs in place; consequently it is really important to look after your skin.
One of the mosy important things you can do to protect your skin is to wear sun cream and avoid sitting out for long periods of time in direct sunlight. Exposure to the sun can be beneficial because it provides the body with vitamin D; however, you must wear sun cream as the sun can be very damaging to the skin. Try to aim for at least factor 15 and use higher factors if you have fair skin. Keep your skin and the rest of your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using moisturising products.
What type of skin do you have?
Everybody has different skin and there are four major skin types; these include oily skin, normal/combination skin, sensitive skin and dry skin. The products you use to care for your skin should be determined by your skin type. Most people will probably have some idea what type of skin they have; if your skin looks and feels greasy or oily, it is likely that you have oily skin. If your forehead is often shiny and slightly oily but the rest of your face appears to be normal, this indicates that you have combination skin; if your face feels dry after washing and has patches of dry skin, this indicates that you have dry skin and if your skin gets irritated easily, this means you have sensitive skin.
Nowadays, there is a huge range of skincare products on the market and they are geared towards all of the different skin types. Try to ensure that you buy the products that correspond to your skin type.
Beauty industry is big, big, big
The beauty industry is booming and we are constantly inundated with adverts on television and in magazines urging us to buy the new must-have products, which promise to instantly turn us into flawless beauties. Having a large choice is great and means that there is something for everyone; however, it can also be really confusing and you may end up with a cupboard full of lotions and potions that you never really use because you have no idea what they actually do.
How to achieve glowing skin
In order to keep the skin on your face healthy and glowing, you need to stock up on essential items, including a facial wash or cleanser, a toner and moisturiser. You should try to buy a special facial moisturiser as these are usually more sensitive than body moisturisers. Try to wash your face twice a day, especially if you wear make-up during the day. If you wear make-up on a regular basis, it may be worth investing in a make-up remover. After you have cleansed your face, apply the toner and then moisturise; you should also exfoliate at least once a week.
Many people forget about their bodies and concentrate solely on caring for the skin on their face; the rest of your body needs caring for in the same way as your face so take time to wash and then moisturise using a body lotion or a moisturiser; some people prefer perfumed light lotions, while other prefer more intensive moisturising creams, which are often perfume-free. If you like to use fake tan, make sure you exfoliate and moisturise before you tan; this will help to stop the tan from streaking and will make it look more natural.
