Atlas Family Chiropractic in Asheville, NC answers some of the most common questions that people have about chiropractors - what they do, and how they can help you.
1. What types of health problems do chiropractors treat? Chiropractors are mainly known for treating patients with neck pain, back pain and headaches, but they also treat patients complaining of pain in the joints of the arms and legs. They provide relief for patients with varying complaints, from tension headaches to low back pain. They are trained to treat pain from injuries as well as from disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Injuries can affect the nervous system and cause pain to radiate to other parts of the body. Chiropractic is based on the belief that the body functions at its best when its structure is properly aligned. The body is better able to heal itself if its bones, joints and muscles are working together as they should be.
2. What can I expect from a visit to a chiropractor's office? After taking a full medical history and performing a physical exam of your spine, the chiropractor will most likely perform an adjustment (also called a manipulation) of the joints in your back, neck, or shoulder. During an adjustment you would be lying faced down on a padded table that is specially designed. The chiropractor applies his or her hands to the body to push a joint beyond its usual range of motion. He or she uses a very controlled, sudden force. It is sometimes possible to hear a popping sound, which is caused by the release of a gas bubble between the joints.
3. Do chiropractic adjustments hurt? Generally not. Most patients feel relaxed after an adjustment. During an adjustment, while the chiropractor pushes the joint beyond its usual range of motion, he/she does not push it further than what would be natural. You may experience minor soreness after treatment but this should not last longer than a day.
4. Do insurance plans usually cover treatment? Chiropractic care is covered by most health plans. It is seen as an effective, drug-free way to treat pain and improve outcomes for patients.
5. What kind of training do chiropractors receive? After attaining a four year college degree with a strong science basis, candidates attend an accredited chiropractic college for four to five years of professional study. Doctors of chiropractic study human anatomy, physiology, neurology and orthopedics. In addition, they spend a considerable amount of time in clinical training for performing spinal adjustments.
6. How often would I have to see a chiropractor? Chiropractic care is generally ongoing. Since it involves cervical manipulation performed by a skilled caregiver it is necessary to visit the chiropractor's office for treatment, as opposed to administering medication at home that a medical doctor would prescribe. Often a patient will continue seeing his or her chiropractor to maintain the improvement of symptoms that has been reached resulting from the adjustments. Exactly how long the course of your treatment would be depends on the exact nature of your injury, and your chiropractor would advise you on this.
7. How do I know if I need to see a chiropractor or a medical doctor? A chiropractor may send you for an X-ray if he or she feels it is needed to clarify the cause of the problem. You can ask your chiropractor if visiting a medical doctor is advised. Chiropractors refer patients to orthopedic doctors if they feel it is necessary. They work closely with medical doctors to manage patients' care.
8. What else do chiropractors do? In addition to treating pain, chiropractors practice prevention and can help guide you toward a healthier lifestyle. Your chiropractor can advise you on better eating habits, exercising for increased wellness and improving your overall well being.
