Millions of books were published in the last decade but what were people reading? Here is a list of the top 10 books that people enjoyed.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
In many ways this decade was the Harry Potter decade. J.K Rowling released books four, five, six and seven during the 2000's. The finale is considered the best as Rowling upped the stakes to introduce a dark and sophisticated side to the magical genre.

THE DA VINCI CODE
This worldwide best seller by Dan Brown was published in 2003. The main character Robert Langdon attempts to solve a murder in Paris taking the reader on a journey through religious history. This detective and conspiracy theme is continued in sequel books.

THE KITE RUNNER
The 2003 debut novel by Khaled Hosseini follows the story of two best friends who get separated by an unspeakable event in their childhood. This intense novel helped millions of people understand the Afghan culture. It is a tragic story of betrayal and redemption.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
The first book of the Millennium Series by Steig Larsson is an award winning crime novel. The best seller is based on a young heroine Lisbeth and tells a compelling tale centred on the theme of sexual violence towards women. This 2008 novel leads the way in crime fiction.

THE ROAD
Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel portrays a father and son's struggle to stay alive after a disaster affects most of society. This powerfully emotional novel leaves the reader bouncing from sadness to happiness.

BRICK LANE
This 2003 novel set in London is about a young Asian girl forced into an arranged marriage with an older man. Readers witness the girl's battle with love, fate and cultural difference. Monica Ali captivates the reader with humour and tragedy.

ATONEMENT
Ian McEwan's 2001 provocative and thoughtful novel is regarded as one of his best works. It features an upper-middle-class girl in interwar England who wishes to be a writer. She makes a life-changing mistake that affects the people around her.

Mark Haddon's 2004 novel about autism and family breakdown focuses on a young autistic boy. It is written for children and adults alike without censoring the realities of living with autism. It is a very intriguing murder mystery.

LIFE OF PI
This 2001 novel's obscure plot features a young boy called Pi who becomes stranded on a lifeboat with 4 animals. This inventive story about spirituality and determination became an international publishing phenomenon.

TWILIGHT
This 2005 novel by Stephanie Meyer started the vampire craze. Her fictional stories depict the life of two lovers living on the edge of desire and danger. The Twilight sagas are full of suspense and romance.
