My name is Roxanne, I come from New York, and I'm currently on holiday in Germany. I had the chance to meet a very interesting artist at the Africa Festival in Würzburg. His family name is Ian Hillman and his artist name is Mantis he comes from Zimbabwe and was at the Africa festival as a guest of the festival promoter Dr.Stefan Oschmann. Being someone who likes meeting and networking with new people, I noticed the artist pass that he had on, and so I decided to ask him what time he was performing... he told me he was there as a guest but he is a musician as well...

Youssou N'Dour was scheduled to play on the main stage that night, and the show was sold out. I asked him if he was going to attend the show.. and he said "I will surely be there..".The Youssou N'Dour show was awesome. And after the show I saw Mantis again, and we had an interesting conversation. I had the chance to ask him about his Music and band. He told me that he has a debut album called love take control that he released at the end of 2006, and that he was working towards the release of his second album called Hipregrocker, where Hip represents the hip-hop elements, Reg the reggae and rocker the rock guitars and riffs in his music. I found the title very interesting, and easy to remember after he explained what it meant.

He also told me that beside coming to watch Chiwoniso (an artist he worked with for a long time in Zimbabwe) his main mission at the festival was to meet an old friend of his calls Dellee one of the front man from a very popular group called Seeed. Mantis toured with Seeed in 2002 during the cool and deadly tour, and he spoke highly of the group and they solo project. I was normally scheduled to be in Frankfurt the next day.. and he advised me to stay and watch the Dellee concept, which was absolutely awesome. During my conversation with Mantis, he said he was planning to stage a show collaboration with Dellee, and to my positive surprise. I see the show is scheduled to take place in Bielefeld Ravensburger Park on 25 September 2010.

I did more research on Mantis and even saw some live video streams of him and his band performing at Rockpalast on his MySpace page (www.myspace.com/ianmantishillman). After experiencing Dellee live and meeting Mantis personally, I could only advise you NOT to miss this show. I visited the Hipregrocker website (www.hipregrocker.com) and got a free download of the title track Hipregrocker (I am loving it!!!). I also went on to purchase the complete downloadable album Hipregrocker, now I am addicted to this sound. Considering that Mantis composed, produced and mixed the entire album himself, it is an impressive demonstration of talent. Now I am so anxious to experience the live interpretation of this album.

I will touch down on more details about my conversation with Mantis, and communication with him since the Africa festival.
