Having a poker night at your house can be a lot of fun. Poker is one of the most popular games these days, especially texas holdem. So getting a group of friends over to your house for a poker tournament is not only entertaining and competitive, but a great social event.

Simply contacting your buddies and inviting them over for a poker game can be good, but with a bit of planning and organisation, you can make it a real big night that everyone will talk about for months. Especially if you and you're friends are over the age of 25, a number of them will have families now, and a poker night is the only chance they get to go out and drink and hang out with their old friends. Getting a leave pass from the wife can be harder to acquire, especially if you have kids.

So how do you make your poker night reach its full potential? Well here are some simple rules to keep things fun for everyone. First off, have a set number of people that are going to play. Eight people is a great number as it makes the money pool decent, will ensure good table interaction, and isn't too hard to cater for.

Too few people will mean that the prize pool is weak and the game will go too fast. Too many people and your friends might get bored waiting for their turn to come around. So make sure you get a good number of don't go ahead with the night.

Secondly, allow buy ins. If you have 8 people playing and someone loses all their chips early on, that's not going to be a fun night for them. Have a system whereby you can buy-in during the first hour (or two). This ensures people will get to play for a minimum amount of time, and also increases the pot winnings with people buying back in.

Catering your poker night is a big issue too. When you're sitting around playing poker you want to be eating and drinking. This passes the time and also you can get pretty hungry sitting there at the table for extended periods of time. So buy lots of munchies for your friends to have during the game. These can include pretzels, chips, chocolates and lollies. Poker can be draining and lots of sugar will ensure you all stay focused and perky!

Providing soft drink and beers always makes things more enjoyable too. But if you have a lot of people coming then it's more than acceptable to say bring your own beer. As long as you plan in advance, get a set amount of people, have good rules to keep everyone in the game initially and put on nice refreshments, your poker night will be lots of fun for all involved!
