One of the most famous organisations that helps people with gambling problems is Gamblers Anonymous, which was established in the US along the same lines as Alcoholics Anonymous, but now has groups in countries all over the world. The approach to treatment is that compulsive or problem gambling is an illness that cannot be cured, but can be controlled with the right kind of support and encouragement.

What does gambling anonymous involve?

If you decide to seek help from Gamblers Anonymous, you will attend weekly meetings with other gambling addicts, some of whom are recovering and others who are just starting the 12 step programme to defeating their addiction. You can speak at meetings if you like or you can listen to other people speak, about their life, their gambling and any problems they have faced in the last week. You don't have to speak and no-one will ask you questions, though you are encouraged to take part or the recovery process will be much slower.

'Mentor' you to recovery

Gamblers Anonymous will attempt, through meetings, counselling and the support of a recovered gambler called a "mentor" to help the addict figure out the reasons that he gambled, the triggers for his destructive behaviour and will find ways to change those behaviours so that gambling is not a problem ever again.

Different types of gamblers

The organisation has a separate wing that supports young gamblers, who may often have developed problems with online betting, and will even provide support groups for the family and friends of gambling addicts, both those who have accepted that they need help and those who are still gambling and will not admit that they have a problem.
If there is not a Gamblers Anonymous meeting in your area, you may find that there are local groups that hold similar meetings and have set up a similar support network to help you through a difficult time.
