James A. Woodbury first patented the wristband in 1866. The earliest types of wristbands were simply made of string loosely tied around the wrist. In the 1900s they became standard for use in identifying hospital patients. Later they would also include patient information, such as allergies. Today there are many types of wristbands for many purposes.

In the late 90s athletes became wearing metallic bracelets around their wrists. These are believed to have some healing powers. Tennis players in particular would wear them and helped make them popular.

Silicone bracelets came into widespread popularity as we rolled into the new millennium. Silicone bracelets became associated with specific causes. Lance Armstrong made yellow a popular symbol of support for those who have cancer. There are also wristbands representing breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung disease, muscular dystrophy, Diabetes, poverty, child abuse, AIDS, animal abuse, colon cancer, nature, gay pride, Epilepsy, anti-smoking, anti-drug or drug abuse, alcohol abuse and heart disease and care.

Wristbands can also be a way to celebrate a friendship or a special loved one in your life. They also be a cool enhancement to an outfit.

Kabbalah bracelets (most are made of red string tied around the wrist) were made popular by Madonna and Britney Spears. Another type is sweatbands, sometimes worn around the head, but some are also worn around the wrist.

Today some wristbands are used for identification or proof that you paid at concerts or events such as festivals, carnivals and fairs. Tyvek is a breathable type of wristband that is allows water vapor to pass through, but they are highly durable. Polyurethane is another type of durable material used to make wristbands.

Wristbands offer something for everyone, from supporting your favorite cause to celebrating a friendship or romance or just simply as a fashion accessory.
