You may wonder why you need a business plan to start an internet business. You already have a computer, you don't need any capital, and your plan is to get the business up and going.

Every business needs a plan. Whether an external party requires you to have a business plan or not, you need it for your own use. A good plan helps you set goals and to think through all aspects of your business. It keeps you from making expensive mistakes. Here are some things to think about when you write your plan.

Purpose
Of course, the primary purpose of your internet business is to make money. Beyond that, however, what is the purpose of your business? Are you providing a service? Selling a product? Investing in something?

Write a purpose statement for your business. Make it clear and succinct-no more than a sentence or two. Then try to condense it further into a short, memorable phrase that you can use as a tag line on your web page.

Description
Write a thorough description of the internet business you plan to start. Expand your purpose statement until you have a focused picture of what your business will look like. How will you provide service or product? Where will you work? Where will you store things? Will you need employees? Writing a description of your business will help you answer important questions like that ahead of time.

Equipment
Will you need to acquire any equipment for your business? If so, how will you finance the acquisitions?

Marketing
Develop a plan to market your business. Determine who your target customers are and how you will reach them with advertising. What resources will you need? How much will marketing cost? What venues will you market your business in? Marketing is the key to a successful business, so take a good amount of time to think through this part of your plan.

Risks
Every business has some risk involved. Identify the risks. Even if all you stand to lose is your own time and energy, you want to know it.

Financials
How much will it cost you to start your business, and when can you expect it to show a profit? This part of the business plan is essential if you are going to ask someone else to invest in it.

Timeline
Establish a timeline for yourself. To do this, you'll have to set some goals and objectives. Plot out how long it will take you to accomplish each step. It will help you stay on track to building a successful internet business.

A plan is an invaluable tool for success, whether your business is on the internet or not. It's worth the time and effort it takes to put one together.
