When producing a film or television programme, each production will have a properties department responsible for supplying and handling props. The term ‘prop’ refers to a range of moveable objects and items, and these props are specifically designed and created for use on set.
The props fall into several categories depending on the nature of use. ‘Dressing’ props refer to props largely used in the background to dress the set, for example furniture, flooring or drapes. Items physically used by the actors are known as ‘hand’ props. Where the props become more specific is when you start using ‘hero’ props, which are central to the action of the scene, ‘stunt’ props, which are a replica of an object or item made especially for film use, and ‘mechanical’ props which move or are illuminated. Weapons such as knives and guns are also designed especially.
Certain props are designed for the screen for reasons of safety, or sometimes because their physical image does not translate well through the camera. The lighting used on set can distort the size, shape and appearance of certain materials which can make them look fake, even though they are actually real. An example of this is a sack; and object that is ordinarily too limp and therefore needs to be starched on one side to duplicate a particular shape.
Prop weapons are often replicas or created with built in safety features. Knives are usually rubber or plastic, swords are dulled until they are blunt, and guns fire blanks or caps. Occasionally on film, real guns might be used but only with specially designed smoke blanks for noise and effect.
