What is an IP phone?
An IP phone is a piece of hardware that uses voice over IP technologies and a set of application to enables you to make phone calls over a broadband internet connection. Other names for IP phone include VoIP phone, IP Telephony, Internet Telephony or Broadband phone.
How does an IP phone work?
If you were to boil it down to its simplest state, VoIP is the process of breaking up your voice into small packets of data, then compressing it though packets and transmitting them over an IP network, then reassembling that packet of data at the receiving end. The end result is that two people can have a conversation and communicate over the internet.
Will an IP phone save me money?
It has been estimated that switching to a VoIP service, so you can use an IP phone, can slash 30-90% off your regular monthly phone bill. Some of the main money saving reasons to switch to an IP phone could include the following: you already have an internet connection, you often make long distance phone calls or you run a small business and you want to cut back on costs.
What is the quality like on an IP phone?
VoIP phone quality is on the up and it is now at the stage, many argue, that is just as good if not better than a landline quality.
What will I need to make my IP phone work?
Once you have your IP phone you will need to plug it directly into your internet connection. You will also need to set up an account with a VoIP service provider; some examples include Vonage or Packet8. VoIP service providers offer a variety of packages and once you register with them you will be able to make VoIP calls.
What are the advantages of using an IP phone?
You will probably save money when compared to a traditional landline. On top of that the call rates are generally cheaper. The best advantage to using an IP phone is that you can make long distance phone calls at a reduced rate.
Are there any problems with using an IP phone?
It has to be said that your VoIP service is only as reliable as the broadband internet connection you have. Whilst these days most internet service providers are fairly reliable, there will still be the occasional downtime, and during that period of time you will not be able to use your IP phone.
Another problem you may encounter is power outages. If you experience a power cut then your IP phone will not be able to be turned on. You can however set up a solution to this, by setting up an Uninterruptible Power Supply, which would eradicate that worry.
One last issue is being able to make emergency calls. Traditional land line phones can trace your location when an emergency call is placed. However, with VoIP these calls cannot be traced to a specific location, therefore it can prove much more of a challenge to work out the callers location. To solve this problem VoIP providers are working with the emergency services and local phone companies to solve this problem.
