When it comes to advertising through temporary kids' tattoos, you have to be able to tap into that 'cool factor' ... yet somehow blend that with effectively marketing your company! A kids' tattoo that 'looks like an ad' will end up being an expensive piece of rubbish, rather than the powerful branding tool that it has the potential to be. Given that for most of us childhood was some time ago, it can be difficult to know whether you're designing a kids tattoo that will be used, or ignored. Today we check out 5 top tips to keep in mind for designing fun and fantastic kids' tattoos.
Tone down the logo
Logos present your company as dependable, reliable, innovative, corporate, inspiring ... but rarely does a logo look 'cool'! If you definitely want to include your logo as part of the design, tone it down a little. Try to incorporate it as a natural part of the design (as one of the elements in an arm or wrist band, for example). You could also think about popping just your company name on the kids' tattoo, rather than your logo.
Create designs for both boys and girls
At most ages and stages throughout childhood, there is no such thing as a unisex design with wide-ranging appeal. Girls have a strong instinct for 'girls' things', and boys have a strong instinct for 'boys' stuff', and never the twain shall meet! If you try to please everyone by creating a unisex design on your kids' tattoos, you will probably end up pleasing nobody.
So, incorporate your logo and message with a pirate, a bucket full of worms or some sort of reptile for boys, and with flowers, lover hearts and kissing lips for girls ... they're far more likely to be worn, loved and shown off!
Be creative with placement
Most kids tattoos designed for advertising purposes are made in a small, rectangular size. This is often the cheapest sizing and allows you to spread your campaign further and wider. However, having the same shape and sizing as every other temporary kids tattoo doesn't help you brand yourself as an innovator, or a company that's different to the rest. It's actually fairly easy to create designs that lend themselves well to alternative placements, like:
• Navel rings
• Wrist bands or ankle bands
• Arm bands
Be current
Kids have a keen eye for what's current. If your target audience is tweens and above, you should do especially well by piggybacking onto any current events that you can. You don't have to be sponsoring or affiliated with the event; you can simply 'support' it, or tell people to have fun while they are there. Public holidays are obvious choices, but you can also use sporting events, shows, and even major concerts.
Look for quality
There are two elements of quality in a kids' tattoo - the resolution available for the print (which can be up to full 300dpi photographic quality), and the duration that kids tattoos will stick for without breaking up.
A lot of temporary tattoos are done in flash style - big, bold colours, minimal detail and fairly standard scenes. Go for a photographic quality kids' tattoo, and your marketing materials will not only stand out among the crowd, they'll also help brand you as a high quality company by association.
Bonus tip: Create a trial run
If you feel you've followed all the tips and still aren't sure whether you've created a tattoo that's utterly hot, or just lukewarm, why not do a trial run? Grab the minimum order quantity of your temporary kids tattoos, give them out at a local school and ask the teachers afterwards what the kids' reaction was like. With a newly refined design, you'll be ready to conquer the kids' tattoo world!
