It's one of the most annoying scenarios that a driver can come across: there you are, driving along without a care in the world when suddenly you hear the distinctive sound of a piece of gravel thudding against the glass in front of you. Debris thrown up from the rear wheels of the car in front can skip up and strike your vehicle without warning, and if you're really unlucky then the incident may leave your car with a chipped windscreen.

If you're faced with such a scenario then be sure to act quickly to salvage the situation. Don't be tempted to simply say ‘oh well' and forget about it; you'll soon come to regret it. Chipped windscreens have the potential to turn into cracked windscreens before you know it - and the latter is a much more serious problem than the former. While chipped windscreens can be quickly and easily repaired by professionals, you'll need to replace the glass entirely if a crack forms.

No matter how small the chip is, get it seen to as soon as you can. For one thing, the difference in cost between repairing a chipped windscreen and having to completely replace it is large, so if you want the most cost effective solution repair it sooner rather than later. Some car insurance providers will actually offer complimentary chipped windscreen repair if you hold a comprehensive policy with them; it's such an easy thing to happen to your car that such added value is well worth considering when next renewing your insurance.

Besides cost, the other factor to take into account is that a crack suddenly developing in your windscreen while you're driving along can be extremely dangerous. Depending on where the crack appears, you could well find your view of the road ahead severely impaired - and if the damage is particularly severe then the integrity of the windscreen could be compromised. It just isn't worth the risk to leave the chip there unattended.

Get in touch with a few specialist repair companies and decide on which one you feel comfortable with based on reputation as well as the amount they're going to charge you. If your car insurance will cover the repair then get in touch with your policy provider to obtain a list of their approved repairers. The job will be over in a matter of minutes, so you'll be back on the road before you know it.
